Biography

Dr. Ralph Hawkins received his medical degree in 1981 from the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in Canada, before completing his fellowships in internal medicine and nephrology at the University of Calgary. He is the recipient of medical and academic awards and has held many clinical positions in Canada. He is author of several medical articles, and is co-editor of a handbook on hypertension. He has been an invited lecturer at several medical meetings in both Canada and the United States. He was an assistant professor of medicine at the University of Saskatchewan in 1990-91 before moving to Kelowna BC where he ran the Okanagan Regional Renal Program until 2000. He moved to Tennessee in 2000 where he served as an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis before joining St. Thomas Medical Group and the Hypertension Institute in Nashville, Tennessee in 2002. He returned to Canada in 2005, joining the Manitoba Clinic in Winnipeg in September 2005 and moving to Calgary in November 2006 where he is now Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of General Internal Medicine. Dr. Hawkins is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and Nephrology, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (with a Certificate of Special Competence in Nephrology), and by the Board of the American Society of Hypertension as a Specialist in Clinical Hypertension. He has received certification for Maintenance of Competence from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada for the period 2000 - 2005. His clinical and research interests include the prevention of kidney diseases associated with high blood pressure and diabetes, and treatment of the metabolic syndrome. Dr. Hawkins also holds a Master of Law degree (LLM) from the University of Northumbria at Newcastle (2002) and is experienced in the clinical application of medical ethics principles.
